Thu 18 Apr: Arrive in Istanbul and transfer to Hotel Olimpiyat. After check-in a security briefing and talk on local customs, cuisine, and essential services will be given. A local orientation walking tour will then be conducted around the Sultanahmet area, the heart of old Constantinople. We finish with a meet and greet refreshment at a roof top restaurant to take in the luxurios sights and sound of this vibrant city. Evening free. O/N Hotel Olimpiyat.
Fri 19 Apr: After breakfast we conduct the famous Old City Tour, and visit the exotic sites of the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque - famous for its blue ceramic tiles, Aya (Santo) Sofia, Topkapi Palace, the Underground Cistern, and the bustling Grand Bazaar. O/N Hotel Olimpiyat (B)
Sat 20 Apr: Morning departure for the Gallipoli peninsula via the Gulf of Saroz, where a ‘ground brief’ and presentation will be given covering the tactical deployment of the Turkish forces leading up to the 25th April 1915 landings. In Gelibolu (Gallipoli) we visit the Crimean War Cemetery. We later visit the ANZAC and Cape Helles battlefields for an overview, and where further ground briefs will be presented, to give the participant a comprehension of the overall dimensions of the campaign. Sun 21 Apr: Today will be the introduction to the Gallipoli campaign from the Allied forces perspective. Presentations will be given on the Naval Campaign and an opportunity to walk through the Canakkale Naval Museum. Later we visit Kemal Evi in Bighali, the private house where Mustafa Kemal Attaturk (‘Father of the Turks’) located his HQ during the campaign. O/N Kale Pansiyon (B,D)
Mon 22 Apr: Today we spend the whole day at the ANZAC battlefields and visit North Beach, Ari Burnu, ANZAC Cove, Queensland Point, Schrapnel Valley, Shell Green, and Lone Pine. Tue 23 Apr: We continue our ANZAC journey from Lone Pine to Johnston’s Jolly, Quinns/Steeles/Courtney’s Posts, The Nek, Russells Top, Baby 700, Chunuk Bair, and Hill 971. In the afternoon we study the.Suvla landings and in particular, Hill 60. O/N Kale Pansiyon (B,D)
Wed 24 Apr: This morning we study the French and British Forces and their role in the campaign. We start at Morto Bay (S Beach) and then visit the Turkish Memorial (Abide) and the French cemetery. We continue to V Beach, past the Medieval Fortress and on to W Beach (Lancashire Landing), and Y Beach. At Twelve Tree Copse we will explore the role of the Australian and New Zealand troops in the second battle of Krithia. In the afternoon we conclude our studies of the campaign by examining the conduct of the Withdrawal by the Allied forces from the Gallipoli peninsula. O/N Kale Pansiyon (B,D)
Thu 25 Apr: Attend the 87th Anniversary Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove followed by a traditional ‘Bully Beef’ stew ‘Gunfire’ breakfast. After breakfast we attend the International, Lone Pine (Australian) and Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Commemorative Services. O/N Kale Pansiyon (B,D)
Fri 26 Apr: Travel by coach to ancient Troy, the city immortalised in Homer’s Illiad where we will participate in a fascinating tour of the 9 layers of civilisation encapsulated at this historic site. Continue along the Aegean coast to Pergamon where we visit the Acropolis. Continue to Selcuk and check-in to Hotel Sumela. O/N Sumela Hotel (B,D)
Sat 27 Apr: Guided tour of Ephesus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and visit the Temple of Hadrian, the famous Roman baths, Curetes Street, the Ampitheatre and the spectacular Celsus Library. Later, visit the House of the Virgin Mary located nearby and visit the Ephesus Museum, home of many of the original artifacts collected at Ephesus such as the statue of Artemis. Sun 28 Apr: Today we drive to Aphrodisias – one of the most attractive ruins of Turkey. Here you will find the Temple of Aphrodite, Acropolis, Odeion, Agora, Stadium (seating capacity of 30,000) and the baths of Hadrian. After Lunch we continue to Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) to inspect the spectacular calcium deposits cascading down to form one of the eight natural wonders of the world. Mon 29 Apr: Day free to visit the sea side resort town of Kusadasi, where there will be the opportunity for you to take an optional cruise to visit the Greek island of Samos, which is nearby. Wed 1 May: A day free, or participate in a walking tour from the famous Grand Bazaar to the Egyptian Spice Market. Later in the morning take an optional cruise along the Bosphorus and perhaps in the afternoon spend time at the War Museum and attend a performance of the Mehter Ottoman period military band. Thu 2 May: Morning free for last minute shopping, before your transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
